Environment in Human Design

Environment is the bottom left arrow of the chart. According to the teaching, it describes the kind of place where you work best: an office, a neighborhood, a city or your spot in a room.

Where to read your color

It is read from the design lunar nodes (about 88 days before your birth). The nodes move slowly, so the color is almost always the same for a given date, even with a vague birth time. The tone, which sets the arrow direction, needs a more reliable time.

Across 2,000 random births, moving the time 15 minutes later changes this color in 0.4% of cases, and one hour later in 1.5%. The tone, which sets the arrow direction, changes far more often. Without a precise birth time, read this page as a list of hypotheses. The full shift table is on the variables page.

Our calculator does not show variables yet, for that reason. Spread of the 6 colors across 20,000 random births between 1950 and 2010, calculated with our engine:

1 · Caves

Color 1 · 18.1% of births

A protected, enclosed space with few people: a closed office or a seat with your back to the wall, with a small chosen group.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, work every other day in a closed corner or with your back to a wall. Each evening, note the place and your focus out of 10.

2 · Markets

Color 2 · 15.4% of births

A place of exchange where people pass through and trade: a shop or a lively open office.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, spend every other half day in a busy place (a café, a shared space). Rate your focus and mood out of 10.

3 · Kitchens

Color 3 · 16.9% of births

A place where people prepare and transform things together: a workshop or a project room where everyone pitches in.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, do every other task next to someone working on the same thing. Rate your focus out of 10.

4 · Mountains

Color 4 · 17.4% of births

A high or set-back spot with a view of the whole: an upper floor with a view or a seat at the back of the room.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, pick a seat with a view or up high every other day. Rate how clear your head feels out of 10 at the end of the day.

5 · Valleys

Color 5 · 15.0% of births

A sheltered place with a familiar group, where the same exchanges come back: a steady team, a neighborhood where people know each other.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, work every other day with the same people in the same place. Rate your focus and mood out of 10.

6 · Shores

Color 6 · 17.2% of births

An edge between two worlds: the waterside, the edge of town, a seat near the door or a role between two teams.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, every other day, settle at the edge of something: near a window or an entrance. Rate your focus out of 10.

Sources also describe two versions of each environment depending on the arrow, but their public descriptions vary too much for us to repeat them here.

Our reservations

  • No study links a birth environment to focus or mood.
  • A pleasant place will help you whatever your chart says: always compare with a normal day, on the same kind of task.
  • The color names come from Ra Uru Hu’s teaching (Jovian Archive). No study backs the system (details here).

Frequently asked questions

What are the 6 environments in Human Design?

Caves, markets, kitchens, mountains, valleys and shores. Each one matches a color of the design lunar nodes.

Do I have to live in a cave or on a mountain?

No. According to the teaching, the word describes a kind of place: a closed office can play the part of a cave, a seat up high the part of a mountain.

Does my environment change if my birth time is wrong?

Rarely for the color: in our measurements, a one hour shift changes it in under 2% of cases. The arrow direction can change.
