Digestion in Human Design

Determination, often called digestion, is the top left arrow of the chart. According to the teaching, it describes the conditions in which your body best takes in what it receives: the setting of a meal more than what is on the plate.

Where to read your color

It is read from the design Sun, the position calculated about 88 days before your birth. Its color gives the theme (appetite, taste, thirst, touch, sound or light). Its tone gives the version: tones 1 to 3, arrow pointing left; tones 4 to 6, arrow pointing right.

Across 2,000 random births, moving the time 15 minutes later changes this color in 6.9% of cases, and one hour later in 27.0%. The tone, which sets the arrow direction, changes far more often. Without a precise birth time, read this page as a list of hypotheses. The full shift table is on the variables page.

Our calculator does not show variables yet, for that reason. Spread of the 6 colors across 20,000 random births between 1950 and 2010, calculated with our engine:

1 · Appetite

Color 1 · 17.1% of births

The theme is the order in which you eat.

Left arrow (tones 1 to 3) · Consecutive · 52% of this color

One food at a time, each dish finished before the next, little mixing on the plate.

Right arrow (tones 4 to 6) · Alternating · 48% of this color

Simple meals, with a rhythm that varies from day to day rather than fixed times.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, every other day, serve your foods separately instead of mixing them. Each evening, rate your comfort after meals out of 10. Compare the two columns.

2 · Taste

Color 2 · 17.0% of births

The theme is choosing food by taste, with strong selection.

Left arrow (tones 1 to 3) · Open · 50% of this color

A menu that moves, chosen by the taste of the moment and the season.

Right arrow (tones 4 to 6) · Closed · 50% of this color

A short list of safe dishes that rarely changes.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, note each day whether you ate a usual or a new dish, and your comfort 2 hours later out of 10. See whether one column stands out.

3 · Thirst

Color 3 · 16.4% of births

The theme is the temperature of what you eat and drink.

Left arrow (tones 1 to 3) · Hot · 48% of this color

Warm or hot dishes and drinks.

Right arrow (tones 4 to 6) · Cold · 52% of this color

Cool dishes and cold or room temperature drinks.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, alternate a mostly warm week and a mostly cool week, changing nothing else. Rate your comfort after meals out of 10.

4 · Touch

Color 4 · 16.6% of births

The theme is the mood of the meal: settled or busy.

Left arrow (tones 1 to 3) · Calm · 51% of this color

Eating in a quiet place without screens, sometimes alone.

Right arrow (tones 4 to 6) · Nervous · 49% of this color

Eating on the move or with something going on: reading or talking.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, eat every other meal in a quiet place without screens and the rest as usual. Rate your comfort after the meal and your focus an hour later out of 10.

5 · Sound

Color 5 · 16.3% of births

The theme is the noise around you while you eat.

Left arrow (tones 1 to 3) · High · 49% of this color

Eating with sound: conversation or music.

Right arrow (tones 4 to 6) · Low · 51% of this color

Eating in silence or close to it.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, alternate a lunch with music or conversation and a lunch in silence. Rate your comfort after the meal out of 10.

6 · Light

Color 6 · 16.6% of births

The theme is the time of day and the light around you.

Left arrow (tones 1 to 3) · Direct · 50% of this color

Your main meal during the day, in daylight.

Right arrow (tones 4 to 6) · Indirect · 50% of this color

Your main meal later in the day, under soft light.

2-week test

For 2 weeks, note the time of your main meal and your comfort the next morning out of 10. Keep your usual times the first week, shift them the second.

These tests remove no food and change no quantities: they only play with the setting. If your relationship with food is difficult right now, skip them.

Our reservations

  • This page is not medical advice: talk to a health professional before changing the way you eat.
  • Nothing shows that determination has any effect of its own on digestion. It promises no weight loss.
  • The names of the 6 colors are consistent across sources. Descriptions of the two versions vary, especially for taste.
  • The color names come from Ra Uru Hu’s teaching (Jovian Archive). No study backs the system (details here).

Frequently asked questions

What is digestion in Human Design?

Determination, one of the 4 variables. It is read from the color and tone of the design Sun and, according to the teaching, describes the setting in which you eat best: appetite, taste, thirst, touch, sound or light.

Can Human Design help me lose weight?

Nothing shows it can. Determination is about the setting of meals, and no study backs its rules. For a weight goal or a digestive issue, talk to a doctor or a dietitian.

How do I find my determination?

You need the color and tone of the design Sun, so a reliable birth time. With a time one hour off, the color changes in about 27% of cases, and the arrow even more often.

What does a left or right arrow mean?

It depends on the tone: 1 to 3 left, 4 to 6 right. For digestion, it gives the version of your color, for example consecutive or alternating appetite.
