Human Design, MBTI, Enneagram, astrology

Human Design often gets compared with the MBTI, the Enneagram or astrology. They all offer to describe you, yet they start from different places. Here are the differences, and what research says.

Human Design and MBTI

The MBTI starts from your answers: in its own way, it measures how you see yourself. Human Design starts from your birth, so you cannot sway the result. Some people like that, and it also means the system cannot be checked from the inside. There is no established link between the two: nothing ties an MBTI type to a Human Design type.

In psychology, the most studied personality model is the Big Five (five broad traits). The MBTI is often compared with it and criticized, in particular because the same person can get a different type when retaking the test.

Human Design and the Enneagram

The Enneagram describes 9 types built around motivations and fears. You find yours through a questionnaire or through reflection, often in a group. Human Design mostly describes mechanics: your pace, how you decide, what you pick up from others. You can read both side by side, and they do not overlap.

Human Design and astrology

This is the closest cousin. Both start from the positions of the planets at your birth. Human Design adds a second moment, about 88 days earlier, and cuts the zodiac into 64 gates tied to the I Ching instead of 12 signs. Your Sun sign and your Sun gate therefore overlap: each sign holds a little over 5 gates.

Astrology has been tested. In 1985, physicist Shawn Carlson published an experiment in the journal Nature where astrologers had to match birth charts with personality profiles. They did no better than chance. Human Design has not yet been tested that way (details here).

How to choose

If you want a validated measure, none of the four is one, and the Big Five remains the reference. If you want a tool for reflection, pick the one whose questions help you most, and test it.

Try this

Take your result in two systems, for example your MBTI type and your Human Design type. For each, write down one sentence of description that made you change something in your week. The one with a concrete effect deserves your time.

Frequently asked questions

How are Human Design and MBTI related?

There is no established link. The MBTI comes from a questionnaire, Human Design from a calculation based on your birth. Any MBTI type can go with any Human Design type.

Is Human Design astrology?

Partly: like astrology, it uses the positions of the planets at your birth, then reads them through the I Ching and a system of 9 centers. See where it comes from.

Which one is the most reliable?

None of the four is scientifically validated for describing a person. Research uses the Big Five instead. Keep these systems as tools for reflection.
