On most Human Design charts, every active gate is black, red, or both. Black comes from the moment you were born, red from a moment about three months earlier. The system calls the first the personality (conscious) and the second the design (unconscious).
Where the two colors come from
The calculation takes the position of 13 bodies at your birth: those are the black gates. It does it again for the moment the Sun sat 88 degrees earlier in the zodiac: those are the red gates. Across 20,000 random births, that second moment falls 89 days before birth on average. That makes 26 positions in all.
Our own charts use slightly different colors: black becomes dark green, red becomes orange, and a gate active on both sides shows in teal. The logic is the same.
What the system says about them
- Black gates (personality) describe what you recognize in yourself, what you could say about you.
- Red gates (design) describe what shows in you without you paying attention, often noticed first by the people close to you.
Your profile follows the same logic: its first number comes from your black Sun, the second from your red Sun. Your incarnation cross takes both Suns and both Earths, two black and two red.
What the numbers show
Across our 20,000 test charts, a chart activates 19.5 different gates on average. Of those, 40% are black only, 40% red only and 20% both. The balance makes sense, since both moments are calculated the same way.
The more surprising part concerns channels. One complete channel in three (33%) only exists because a black gate meets a red gate: neither your birth alone nor the red moment alone would complete it. 69% of charts have at least one channel like that. The system reads it as a part of you that needs both layers to work.
Common traps
- Reading “unconscious” the psychology way. The word only names the moment used in the calculation. It has no established link with the unconscious of Freud or of modern psychology.
- Thinking red counts for less. For type, authority and defined centers, a red gate counts exactly like a black one.
- Forgetting the birth time. The Moon changes gate about every 10 hours, so without an exact time both your Moons, black and red, can be off.
On your chart, pick one gate that is black only and one that is red only, and read their pages. Say nothing, then ask two people close to you which of the two descriptions sounds more like you. If they pick the red one and you picked the black one, the system got that point right. If not, write it down.
