Profiles

The 6 lines in Human Design

Every gate in the chart splits into 6 lines. They are read mostly through your profile: the two numbers, like 2/4 or 6/3, are the lines of your Sun at two moments.

Where the lines come from

The zodiac is cut into 64 gates, and each gate into 6 lines. A line covers a little under one degree: the Sun crosses it in less than a day. Your profile takes the line of your Sun at birth (first number) and the line of your Sun about 88 days earlier (second number).

Across our 2,000 random births, each line falls on the birth Sun in 15 to 18% of cases, so roughly one time in six. Profiles do not all share the same frequency: six profiles make up about 14% of charts each, and six others about 2%. See the frequencies.

The 6 lines, one by one

Line 1 · Groundwork

You need to understand the basics inside out before you feel safe moving forward.

What several sources agree on
  • Every other line builds on yours. You're the groundwork.
  • You move forward mostly inward, studying and thinking things over rather than putting yourself out there.
  • Your digging pays off when you're after accurate information rather than something to calm your nerves.

Profiles with this line : 1/3, 1/4, 4/1, 5/1

Line 2 · Knack

Your talents feel obvious to you, and you like being left alone until someone comes looking for you.

What several sources agree on
  • Your gifts showed up without lessons, and they run genuinely deep.
  • You're not great at seeing your own talent. Other people usually spot it before you do.
  • Not every call is worth answering, and learning which one to take is the heart of your path.
  • Guard your alone time and pick who you share with. That retreat feeds you.

Profiles with this line : 2/4, 2/5, 5/2, 6/2

Line 3 · Trial

You learn by trying, messing up and trying again, and your mistakes slowly turn into know-how.

What several sources agree on
  • You tend to shake up set rules and distrust anything that's frozen in place.
  • You often find out what doesn't work first, and that points you the right way.
  • Your real strength is getting back up after every fall.
  • Your bonds form and come apart through the experiences you share, and that's pretty normal.

Profiles with this line : 1/3, 3/5, 3/6, 6/3

Line 4 · Circle

Your best chances come through people you already know, and friendships matter a lot to you.

What several sources agree on
  • Your influence travels through the ties you've built more than through anything you put on show.
  • Cold approaches rarely work for you. Build the relationship first and the opening follows.
  • People open up to you easily, and you often end up as the confidant.
  • You naturally face outward, toward other people more than yourself.

Profiles with this line : 1/4, 2/4, 4/6, 4/1

Line 5 · Go-to

People see you as the one who'll fix it, for better and for worse.

What several sources agree on
  • Your fixes are hands-on and work for lots of people, thanks to a very solid practical sense.
  • People pin their hopes on you, often before they even know you.
  • Your reputation is what you guard most, and one letdown can tip it fast.
  • Knowing what you can actually deliver before you promise keeps your credibility safe.

Profiles with this line : 2/5, 3/5, 5/1, 5/2

Line 6 · Hindsight

Life tends to come in three stages: you experiment, you step back, then others start looking to your example.

What several sources agree on
  • You look at life beyond your own interests, with an eye on what's changing.
  • How you live inspires people more than anything you say.

Lower and upper lines

The system puts lines 1, 2 and 3 on the personal side (what you build for yourself) and lines 4, 5 and 6 on the side of other people (how you reach others). A 1/3 profile has both its lines on the personal side, and a 4/6 profile has both on the side of other people.

Try this

Read the sentences for your two lines, then for two lines outside your profile. Rate each from 0 to 10 for how much it sounds like you. If your own two lines do not come out clearly ahead, keep your profile as one clue among others.

Frequently asked questions

What do the two numbers in a Human Design profile mean?

The first is the line of your Sun at birth, the second the line of your Sun about 88 days earlier. A 3/5 profile pairs line 3 (trial) with line 5 (go-to). All 12 combinations are on the profiles page.

Which line is the rarest?

None of them: on the birth Sun, each line shows up about one time in six. Some profiles are rare, like 4/1 or 3/6, at around 2% of charts each.

Do I need my exact birth time to know my lines?

For your profile, it helps: in our test, a one hour shift changes the profile in 8.8% of cases. See the birth time page.
